1And David said in his heart, I shall now perish one day by the hand of Saul: there is nothing better for me than that I should escape into the land of the Philistines; and Saul will despair of me, to seek me any more in all the borders of Israel: so shall I escape out of his hand.
2And David arose, and passed over, he and the six hundred men that were with him, unto Achish the son of Maoch, king of Gath.
3And David dwelt with Achish at Gath, he and his men, every man with his household, even David with his two wives, Ahinoam the Jezreelitess, and Abigail the Carmelitess, Nabal's wife.
4And it was told Saul that David was fled to Gath: and he sought no more again for him.
5And David said unto Achish, If now I have found favor in thine eyes, let them give me a place in one of the cities in the country, that I may dwell there: for why should thy servant dwell in the royal city with thee?
6Then Achish gave him Ziklag that day: wherefore Ziklag pertaineth unto the kings of Judah unto this day.
7And the number of the days that David dwelt in the country of the Philistines was a full year and four months.
8And David and his men went up, and made a raid upon the Geshurites, and the Girzites, and the Amalekites; for those `nations' were the inhabitants of the land, who were of old, as thou goest to Shur, even unto the land of Egypt.
9And David smote the land, and saved neither man nor woman alive, and took away the sheep, and the oxen, and the asses, and the camels, and the apparel; and he returned, and came to Achish.
10And Achish said, Against whom have ye made a raid to-day? And David said, Against the South of Judah, and against the South of the Jerahmeelites, and against the South of the Kenites.
11And David saved neither man nor woman alive, to bring them to Gath, saying, Lest they should tell of us, saying, So did David, and so hath been his manner all the while he hath dwelt in the country of the Philistines.
12And Achish believed David, saying, He hath made his people Israel utterly to abhor him; therefore he shall be my servant for ever.
1다윗이 그 마음에 생각하기를 내가 후일에는 사울의 손에 붙잡히리니 블레셋 사람들의 땅으로 피하여 들어가는 것이 좋으리로다 사울이 이스라엘 온 영토 내에서 다시 나를 찾다가 단념하리니 내가 그의 손에서 벗어나리라 하고
2다윗이 일어나 함께 있는 사람 육백 명과 더불어 가드 왕 마옥의 아들 아기스에게로 건너가니라
3다윗과 그의 사람들이 저마다 가족을 거느리고 가드에서 아기스와 동거하였는데 다윗이 그의 두 아내 이스르엘 여자 아히노암과 나발의 아내였던 갈멜 여자 아비가일과 함께 하였더니
4다윗이 가드에 도망한 것을 어떤 사람이 사울에게 전하매 사울이 다시는 그를 수색하지 아니하니라
5다윗이 아기스에게 이르되 바라건대 내가 당신께 은혜를 입었다면 지방 성읍 가운데 한 곳을 내게 주어 내가 살게 하소서 당신의 종이 어찌 당신과 함께 왕도에 살리이까 하니
6아기스가 그 날에 시글락을 그에게 주었으므로 시글락이 오늘까지 유다 왕에게 속하니라
7다윗이 블레셋 사람들의 지방에 산 날 수는 일 년 사 개월이었더라
8다윗과 그의 사람들이 올라가서 그술 사람과 기르스 사람과 아말렉 사람을 침노하였으니 그들은 옛적부터 술과 애굽 땅으로 지나가는 지방의 주민이라
9다윗이 그 땅을 쳐서 남녀를 살려두지 아니하고 양과 소와 나귀와 낙타와 의복을 빼앗아 가지고 돌아와 아기스에게 이르매
10아기스가 이르되 너희가 오늘은 누구를 침노하였느냐 하니 다윗이 이르되 유다 네겝과 여라무엘 사람의 네겝과 겐 사람의 네겝이니이다 하였더라
11다윗이 그 남녀를 살려서 가드로 데려가지 아니한 것은 그의 생각에 그들이 우리에게 대하여 이르기를 다윗이 행한 일이 이러하니라 하여 블레셋 사람들의 지방에 거주하는 동안에 이같이 행하는 습관이 있었다 할까 두려워함이었더라
12아기스가 다윗을 믿고 말하기를 다윗이 자기 백성 이스라엘에게 심히 미움을 받게 되었으니 그는 영원히 내 부하가 되리라고 생각하니라
In a world that constantly demands more — more productivity, more achievement, more anxiety — Psalm 23 speaks a radical word of rest. The shepherd does not drive the sheep; he leads them. There is a profound difference between a God who demands and a God who guides. Today, where do you need to let the Shepherd lead you into rest?

Lord, help me to trust you as my shepherd today. In the places where I feel lack, remind me of your abundance. In the moments of striving, call me back to rest in you. Amen.

1These also are proverbs of Solomon, which the men of Hezekiah king of Judah copied out.
2It is the glory of God to conceal a thing; But the glory of kings is to search out a matter.
3As the heavens for height, and the earth for depth, So the heart of kings is unsearchable.
4Take away the dross from the silver, And there cometh forth a vessel for the refiner:
5Take away the wicked `from' before the king, And his throne shall be established in righteousness.
6Put not thyself forward in the presence of the king, And stand not in the place of great men:
7For better is it that it be said unto thee, Come up hither, Than that thou shouldest be put lower in the presence of the prince, Whom thine eyes have seen.
8Go not forth hastily to strive, Lest `thou know not' what to do in the end thereof, When thy neighbor hath put thee to shame.
9Debate thy cause with thy neighbor `himself', And disclose not the secret of another;
10Lest he that heareth it revile thee, And thine infamy turn not away.
11A word fitly spoken Is `like' apples of gold in network of silver.
12`As' an ear-ring of gold, and an ornament of fine gold, `So is' a wise reprover upon an obedient ear.
13As the cold of snow in the time of harvest, `So is' a faithful messenger to them that send him; For he refresheth the soul of his masters.
14`As' clouds and wind without rain, `So is' he that boasteth himself of his gifts falsely.
15By long forbearing is a ruler persuaded, And a soft tongue breaketh the bone.
16Hast thou found honey? eat so much as is sufficient for thee, Lest thou be filled therewith, and vomit it.
17Let thy foot be seldom in thy neighbor's house, Lest he be weary of thee, and hate thee.
18A man that beareth false witness against his neighbor Is a maul, and a sword, and a sharp arrow.
19Confidence in an unfaithful man in time of trouble Is `like' a broken tooth, and a foot out of joint.
20`As' one that taketh off a garment in cold weather, `and as' vinegar upon soda, So is he that singeth songs to a heavy heart.
21If thine enemy be hungry, give him bread to eat; And if he be thirsty, give him water to drink:
22For thou wilt heap coals of fire upon his head, And Jehovah will reward thee.
23The north wind bringeth forth rain: So doth a backbiting tongue an angry countenance.
24It is better to dwell in the corner of the housetop, Than with a contentious woman in a wide house.
25`As' cold waters to a thirsty soul, So is good news from a far country.
26`As' a troubled fountain, and a corrupted spring, `So is' a righteous man that giveth way before the wicked.
27It is not good to eat much honey: So `for men' to search out their own glory is grievous.
28He whose spirit is without restraint Is `like' a city that is broken down and without walls.
1이것도 솔로몬의 잠언이요 유다 왕 히스기야의 신하들이 편집한 것이니라
2일을 숨기는 것은 하나님의 영화요 일을 살피는 것은 왕의 영화니라
3하늘의 높음과 땅의 깊음 같이 왕의 마음은 헤아릴 수 없느니라
4은에서 찌꺼기를 제하라 그리하면 장색의 쓸 만한 그릇이 나올 것이요
5왕 앞에서 악한 자를 제하라 그리하면 그의 왕위가 의로 말이암아 견고히 서리라
6왕 앞에서 스스로 높은 체하지 말며 대인들의 자리에 서지 말라
7이는 사람이 네게 이리로 올라 오라고 말하는 것이 네 눈에 보이는 귀인 앞에서 저리로 내려 가라고 말하는 것보다 나음이니라
8너는 서둘러 나가서 다투지 말라 마침내 네가 이웃에게서 욕을 보게 될 때에 네가 어찌할 줄을 알지 못할까 두려우니라
9너는 이웃과 다투거든 변론만 하고 남의 은밀한 일은 누설하지 말라
10듣는 자가 너를 꾸짖을 터이요 또 네게 대한 악평이 네게서 떠나지 아니할까 두려우니라
11경우에 합당한 말은 아로새긴 은 쟁반에 금 사과니라
12슬기로운 자의 책망은 청종하는 귀에 금 고리와 정금 장식이니라
13충성된 사자는 그를 보낸 이에게 마치 추수하는 날에 얼음 냉수 같아서 능히 그 주인의 마음을 시원하게 하느니라
14선물한다고 거짓 자랑하는 자는 비 없는 구름과 바람 같으니라
15오래 참으면 관원도 설득할 수 있나니 부드러운 혀는 뼈를 꺾느니라
16너는 꿀을 보거든 족하리만큼 먹으라 과식함으로 토할까 두려우니라
17너는 이웃집에 자주 다니지 말라 그가 너를 싫어하며 미워할까 두려우니라
18자기의 이웃을 쳐서 거짓 증거 하는 사람은 방망이요 칼이요 뾰족한 화살이니라
19환난 날에 진실하지 못한 자를 의뢰하는 것은 부러진 이와 위골된 발 같으니라
20마음이 상한 자에게 노래하는 것은 추운 날에 옷을 벗음 같고 소다 위에 식초를 부음 같으니라
21네 원수가 배고파하거든 음식을 먹이고 목말라하거든 물을 마시게 하라
22그리 하는 것은 핀 숯을 그의 머리에 놓는 것과 일반이요 여호와께서 네게 갚아 주시리라
23북풍이 비를 일으킴 같이 참소하는 혀는 사람의 얼굴에 분을 일으키느니라
24다투는 여인과 함께 큰 집에서 사는 것보다 움막에서 혼자 사는 것이 나으니라
25먼 땅에서 오는 좋은 기별은 목마른 사람에게 냉수와 같으니라
26의인이 악인 앞에 굴복하는 것은 우물이 흐려짐과 샘이 더러워짐과 같으니라
27꿀을 많이 먹는 것이 좋지 못하고 자기의 영예를 구하는 것이 헛되니라
28자기의 마음을 제어하지 아니하는 자는 성읍이 무너지고 성벽이 없는 것과 같으니라

6Blessed be Jehovah, Who hath not given us as a prey to their teeth.
